Last metro departures

BKK now runs the M2, M3 and M4 later every night, says its night-metro page. The last departures it lists:

Line and direction Sunday–Thursday nights Friday and Saturday nights
M2 from Deák Ferenc tér, both directions 0:00 1:00
M3 towards Újpest-központ 0:03 1:03
M3 towards Kőbánya-Kispest 23:56 0:56
M4 from Kálvin tér towards Kelenföld 0:04 1:04

The page does not include the M1, so do not count on it late in the evening. It also says some tram, trolleybus and bus timetables were adjusted to connect with these last trains.

All-night lines

BKK's night network page describes tram 6 and the 100E and 200E airport buses as running day and night; check the airport bus timetable for your hour in BudapestGO. The airport routes are compared in our airport to city guide.

Night buses

The rest of the city is covered by 47 night bus lines, mostly numbered in the 900s. BKK rebuilt the network from the night of 1–2 July 2026, promising journeys up to 10–15 minutes faster to many areas, more direct links from the centre and night trolleybuses. Night "telebuses" run only when a trip is requested.

The renewal changed many route numbers, so older maps and guides are out of date. Examples from BKK's tables:

  • 956 was replaced by 905 and 905A.
  • 979 was replaced by 910, 912, 933 and 933A.
  • 901 runs unchanged.

One useful line from the centre: 912 runs from Deák Ferenc tér to Mártonhegy via Széll Kálmán tér. On weekend nights, BKK says many night buses that run parallel to the metro now go only as far as the metro terminals or outer metro stops, where they connect with the last trains.

Because so much changed, plan each night trip in the BudapestGO app or BKK's journey planner rather than from memory.

Tickets and boarding at night

BKK's price list (checked 30 October 2026) has no separate night fare:

Ticket Price
Single ticket 500 Ft
Single ticket bought on board 700 Ft
30-minute ticket 600 Ft
90-minute ticket 850 Ft
Budapest 24-hour ticket 2,750 Ft
Budapest 72-hour ticket 5,750 Ft

The front-door boarding page explains how night buses work:

  1. Outside the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút), you board night buses through the front door and show the driver a valid ticket or pass. Inside the boulevard, all doors are open. Some lines, including 901, 917 and 955, use the front door along their whole route.
  2. Single tickets, whether bought in advance or from the driver, must be validated in the machine in the driver's cab.
  3. No ticket? Drivers sell one for 700 Ft on buses and trolleybuses with a sticker in the cab. BKK recommends buying in advance, for example in the BudapestGO app, which saves 200 Ft per ride.
  4. With a pram or wheelchair, you can use any door but must still show your ticket.

For choosing between single tickets and passes, see our public transport tickets guide.

Taking a taxi

A taxi makes sense after the metro has stopped if your night bus needs a change, you are carrying luggage, or a group can share the fare. BKK's taxi page for passengers sets out how to recognise a licensed Budapest taxi. Get in only if you see all of these:

  • a yellow car with a yellow licence plate;
  • "minősített budapesti taxi" on the front left door;
  • the tariff table on the dashboard and on both rear doors;
  • a sticker on the rear side windows with the plate number and the driver's ID number;
  • the permit number on the front right door.

The official price combines a base fee, a distance fee and a time fee, counted from when the meter starts until it stops at your destination. BKK says the official tariff is the same at every time of day and with every provider; there is no night rate. Trips to or from Liszt Ferenc Airport have a separate base fee of 2,100 Ft, introduced on 1 August 2026. BKK publishes the full tariff only as an image, which we could not read, so compare the meter with the table on the taxi's door.

You can pay in cash or by physical or digital bank card. BKK lists Bolt, City Taxi, Elit Taxi, Főtaxi and Uber Taxi as qualified companies to order from.

Matching the plan to your night

  • Dinner or a concert ending before midnight, Sunday to Thursday: the metro still works; check the last train on your line in the table above.
  • Friday or Saturday out until 1:00: the M2, M3 and M4 run until about 1:00. Leave a few minutes' margin at Deák Ferenc tér.
  • Later than that, staying near tram 6: use it; it runs all night.
  • Later than that, elsewhere: plan a 900-series night bus in BudapestGO, and have a ticket ready if you are boarding outside the Grand Boulevard.
  • Rudas night bathing: it runs from 22:00 to 3:00 on Friday and Saturday nights, according to the Rudas opening hours, long after the last metro. Plan a night bus or a licensed taxi before you go in. Our thermal baths comparison covers the night ticket.
  • Christmas market evenings: compare the market closing times in our Christmas markets guide with the last-metro table above.
