Ticket price and how to pay

The museum belongs to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Its price is on the Ministry's museum and site fee list: €17 for foreign visitors. The list quotes Istanbul prices in euros only and prints no reduced rate for foreign children or students. At the Central Bank's indicative selling rate for 2 November 2026 (€1 = 55.996 TL), €17 is about 952 TL.

You can buy at the museum or online. The Ministry sells a full-price e-ticket for the museum on muze.gov.tr, but the product page does not show its price, validity or refund terms before checkout. Buying ahead mainly saves the queue at the window; it does not save money.

The museum page says the Müzekart is valid for Turkish citizens. It says nothing about foreign residents.

Single ticket or Museum Pass?

The MuseumPass Istanbul page names this museum as one of its 13. The pass costs €105, is valid for five days from your first museum visit, and allows one entry per museum.

The museum works best as one stop on a Sultanahmet day, so compare the pass with what you would really visit. Using fee-list prices for foreign visitors:

Ministry museums in your five days Single tickets Museum Pass
This museum only €17 €105
+ Istanbul Archaeological Museums (€15) €32 €105
+ Galata Tower (€30) €62 €105
+ Maiden's Tower (€27) €89 €105

Even the four-museum plan is €16 cheaper with single tickets, and we could not confirm that the Maiden's Tower is among the pass's 13 museums. Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace are not Ministry museums, so they never count toward the pass's value here. Bigger itineraries are worked through in our Museum Pass Istanbul guide.

Opening hours

The museum page gives one timetable all year:

  • Open 09:00 to 18:30.
  • Ticket office closes 17:30.
  • Closed days: none ("her gün açık", open every day).

The MuseumPass page says pass holders must enter by 18:45, which is after the museum closes. Go by the museum page and arrive before 17:30. The page lists no holiday closures; that is not a promise that the museum never shuts, so check it the day before a public holiday.

Istanbul, Türkiye

Where it is and when to fit it in

The museum's address is Binbirdirek Mahallesi, At Meydanı Sokak No. 12, Sultanahmet. The museum page describes the square in front as the one where chariot races were held in Byzantine times, and notes that the Blue Mosque gives Sultanahmet Square its name.

Because it is open every day, the museum is a good fixed point for the day when Topkapı is shut. Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays, and its ticket office runs from 09:00 to 17:00.

Situation What to do
Tuesday in Sultanahmet Topkapı is closed: give this museum a full morning or afternoon
Arriving after 16:30 Come here rather than Topkapı, which stops selling at 17:00
Short of time Prioritise the rug galleries the museum is known for

Visiting rules for the two great mosques nearby are in our Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque guide. The Istanbul Archaeological Museums guide covers the other Ministry museum in Sultanahmet, which keeps the same 17:30 ticket cut-off.

What you will see

The building is a sight in its own right. The museum page says Süleyman the Magnificent commissioned it in 1520, it was later given to his grand vizier İbrahim Pasha, and apart from the royal palaces it is one of the earliest palace buildings to survive. The museum itself first opened in 1914 in the imaret (soup kitchen) of the Süleymaniye Mosque complex, moved here in 1983, and reopened in 2014 after restoration.

According to the same page, the collection spans the Umayyad, Abbasid, Seljuk and Ottoman periods and more. Three parts stand out:

  • Rugs. The page calls the rug collection "the best in the world" and points to rare 13th-century Seljuk carpets.
  • Ethnography. A hall off the courtyard shows daily life in 19th-century Istanbul.
  • Holy Relics. A section with objects the page compares to those in Topkapı Palace.
