JR, Hankyu and Hanshin side by side
JR West publishes a fare and travel-time comparison that includes its two private rivals on this route. The times are for the fastest weekday daytime train on each line.
| Line | From (Osaka) | To (Kobe) | Adult single | Fastest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JR Kobe Line | Osaka | Sannomiya | ¥420 | 21 min |
| Hankyu Kobe Line | Osaka-umeda | Kobe-sannomiya | ¥330 | 27 min |
| Hanshin Main Line | Osaka-umeda | Kobe-sannomiya | ¥330 | 31 min |
None of these fares has a seat supplement. JR West's basic riding guide lists only limited expresses such as HARUKA and the Shinkansen as needing an extra ticket, so JR's rapid trains run on the plain fare. The same guide says IC cards such as ICOCA work on railways across Japan, which covers all three lines.
Worked example: two adults, Umeda to Sannomiya and back. JR costs 4 × ¥420 = ¥1,680; Hankyu or Hanshin costs 4 × ¥330 = ¥1,320. The ¥360 difference buys about 6 minutes each way on JR compared with Hankyu, and about 10 minutes compared with Hanshin. That is rarely what decides the trip. The walk to the platform usually is.
Which line fits where you stay in Osaka
JR Osaka, Hankyu Osaka-umeda and Hanshin Osaka-umeda are three different stations, so the right line is usually the one whose station you reach first.
| You stay near | Take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| JR Osaka Station, Umeda north side | JR | Fastest ride and no transfer |
| Hankyu Osaka-umeda, Chayamachi | Hankyu | Cheapest fare from the station next to you |
| Hanshin Osaka-umeda, Umeda south side | Hanshin | Same fare as Hankyu, also serves Motomachi |
| Namba, Shinsaibashi south | Hanshin from Osaka-Namba | Direct to Kobe-Sannomiya, ¥420 |
| Shin-Osaka | JR | Shin-Osaka is a JR station; see below for the Shinkansen |
From Namba you do not need to ride up to Umeda first. Hanshin's fare table for its main sections lists Osaka-Namba to Kobe-Sannomiya at ¥420 for adults and ¥210 for children. Hanshin does not show a date on that table or give the journey time there, so check the time in a route planner.
From Shin-Osaka, JR trains run to Sannomiya without changing to a private line, and Kobe's Shinkansen station, Shin-Kobe, is on the Sanyo Shinkansen, as VISIT KOBE's first-time guide notes. We did not find an official page giving the Shin-Osaka fares, so this guide does not quote them; the ticket machines show them before you pay.
Which Kobe station to aim for
Sannomiya is the hub: VISIT KOBE says that for transport options "you cannot beat the Sannomiya area", and all three lines stop there. For most first visits, any of the three lines works.
The exception is the old harbour side of the centre. Visit HYOGO's Nankinmachi (Chinatown) page puts it about 5 minutes on foot from JR or Hanshin Motomachi Station, against about 10 minutes from Hankyu Kobe-sannomiya. That page names Motomachi as a JR and Hanshin station and sends Hankyu riders from Kobe-sannomiya, so if lunch in Chinatown is the plan, ride JR or Hanshin on to Motomachi.
Hanshin trains also run further west than Kobe. Sanyo Electric Railway's ticket page notes direct limited express trains between Sanyo Himeji and Hanshin Kobe-sannomiya and Osaka-umeda, which is useful if you are going on to Himeji (see below).

Passes: what does and does not cover Kobe
The Osaka Amazing Pass (¥3,500 for one day) covers Hankyu, Hanshin and other private railways only "mainly running in Osaka City", so do not count on it for a ride to Kobe; it is an Osaka sightseeing pass. Our Amazing Pass guide explains when it pays off.
The JR Kansai Mini Pass costs ¥3,000 for three consecutive days and lists Kobe and Hyogo in its area, though the exact area is shown only on a map image. It is sold only outside Japan to holders of a foreign passport entering as a Temporary Visitor. A Kobe round trip on JR costs ¥840, so the pass pays only if you combine Kobe with other JR trips; our guide to what replaced the JR Kansai Area Pass runs the numbers.
Going on to Himeji, or to Kyoto instead
Kobe is often paired with Himeji Castle, which is further west along the same JR and Hanshin–Sanyo lines; our Himeji Castle day trip guide covers the trains, the castle's hours and its last entry. If you are choosing between day trips, the Osaka to Kyoto train guide compares the equivalent three lines in the other direction.
