Decisions to make before you travel
- How do you get in from Kansai Airport? It depends on your hotel. For Namba, Nankai's Rapi:t Digital Ticket costs ¥1,410 for an adult, fare and reserved seat included, and the unreserved Airport Express costs the ordinary fare, ¥970 in JR West's fare comparison as of 1 April 2026. For Tennoji, Shin-Osaka or Kyoto, JR's HARUKA visitor ticket is priced by purchase date: to Shin-Osaka ¥1,800 if bought by 31 October 2026 and ¥1,900 from 1 November. Limousine buses cost ¥1,800 to Osaka Station (Umeda) or Uehommachi and ¥1,400 to Namba (OCAT) (Nankai, JR West and the bus operator KATE, checked 30 October 2026).
- How will you pay for the metro? Osaka Metro single fares are ¥190–¥390 for an adult. The Enjoy Eco Card day ticket is ¥820 on weekdays and ¥620 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays (child ¥310) and also covers Osaka City Bus. Contactless bank cards work at gates with the dedicated reader, but always at the adult fare and with no published daily cap.
- Pass or pay as you go? The Osaka Amazing Pass costs ¥3,500 for one day and ¥5,000 for two, at the same price for children, and covers the metro, City Bus, private railways inside the city and about 40 attractions, but no JR lines. JR West stopped selling the Kansai Area Pass on 30 September 2026.
- What has to be booked? Every Tsutenkaku observation-deck ticket needs an entry-time slot, and pass holders reserve theirs at the tower on the day. The HARUKA visitor ticket cannot be bought in Japan: reserve it online or buy it abroad before you fly.
- What changes soon, and what closes in winter? Tax-free shopping becomes a refund for purchases from 1 November 2026. Osaka Castle Main Tower closes 28 December–1 January, Tsutenkaku charges ¥1,800 for adults from 30 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, Shitennoji's paid areas close at 16:00 from October to March, and the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living on the Amazing Pass list is closed until 5 January 2027.
- What taxes apply? Osaka Prefecture's accommodation tax is ¥200, ¥400 or ¥500 per person per night depending on the room charge, and nothing below ¥5,000. For tax-free purchases from 1 November 2026 you pay the tax-inclusive price, then pass a customs check before checking in bags when you leave Japan within 90 days; at Kansai Airport you can also do this through Visit Japan Web on the dedicated Wi-Fi.

What to recheck before you go
The HARUKA price at checkout, the last limousine bus from your terminal, the Nishinomaru Garden admission (official pages give ¥200 or ¥300) and each shop's refund method and fee under the new tax-free system are the items most likely to differ from what is shown here. Osaka Metro also says day-ticket pricing over the New Year can differ from the usual weekday and weekend split. Each guide names the page it follows and the date it was checked; open that page again for your travel dates.
