A change of airport is part of the connection
Read both airport codes before buying the onward flight. BKK is Suvarnabhumi; DMK is Don Mueang. A cheap fare combination can involve immigration, baggage reclaim, a road journey and a fresh bag drop before you reach the next security queue.
One booking reference does not tell you every operational detail. Ask the airline whether this particular itinerary requires entry into Thailand, baggage collection and self-transfer, and what assistance or rebooking applies if the first flight is late. On separate tickets, check each booking's conditions; do not assume the second airline will protect a missed departure.
Before travel, use the arrival requirements guide for your passport and entry situation. A landside airport transfer is not the same as remaining in an international transit area.
What the free shuttle actually offers
The current AOT BKK transport document lists the following:

For the reverse direction, the DMK shuttle listing names terminal 1, floor 1, gate 3, and terminal 2, floor 1, gate 14. That listing also displays a closed-day card alongside its normal-service description, and older official pages give a different door. Ask the information desk for the operating pickup point before carrying all your luggage outside. At BKK the shuttle counter contact is +66 84 718 8800; the DMK listing gives +66 2 535 1248.
Treat half-hourly service as a published normal interval, not a departure reservation. You still need time to reach the curb, confirm eligibility and wait for space.
Build the connection from the second flight backwards
Write down the onward airline's bag-drop and boarding cutoffs first. Then subtract the departure-terminal queue, road transfer, shuttle wait, arrival baggage/customs process and your own walking or assistance allowance. A flight-to-flight gap is not the same as time available on the road.
For illustration only, a six-hour gap loses half its time if arrival formalities take one hour and you choose a two-hour airport-return allowance. You then have three hours for reaching the pickup, waiting and crossing the city, before adding any disruption margin. These are example inputs, not Bangkok averages or a safe minimum connection. Use your actual airline requirements and arrival conditions.
With separate tickets, an inflexible onward flight and checked bags, an overnight can be the more resilient purchase. It costs a room but avoids betting the entire onward fare on a same-day road transfer. Ask about a confirmed airport transfer when choosing that room.
Transfer in this order
- Confirm the onward airport, terminal and airline check-in deadline; save the ticket offline.
- Follow your airline's connection instructions. If told to collect bags and enter Thailand, complete those formalities before seeking public transport.
- Ask airport staff whether the shuttle is running and when the next bus actually leaves. Compare that wait with your remaining deadline.
- Keep bags with you unless a specific through-baggage arrangement has been confirmed. Storage at the first airport would add a return trip.
- On arrival at the other airport, go to the correct airline counter or security process rather than treating the road journey's end as the end of the transfer.
If the shuttle is unavailable or the wait is too long
Use the official taxi queue or a clearly identified booked vehicle. Request a quote or metered-fare explanation including airport charges, tolls and any luggage surcharge. Confirm the party and bags fit; a nominal passenger count does not describe boot space or a child restraint.
A car can remove the wait for the next bus, but it uses the same road network and cannot guarantee recovery from a late flight. If your latest plausible arrival at the second airport is already beyond the airline's cutoff, contact that airline about the booking before paying for a rushed ride.
If you decide to stop overnight instead, choose the departure-airport side or a property with a confirmed early transfer. A city sightseeing detour belongs to a longer stay, not a connection whose spare time has just disappeared.
