Settle the hotel night before you land

If you land at 00:30 on Saturday and want a room straight away, ask the hotel whether you need the Friday-night reservation held for a late arrival. A Saturday booking with afternoon check-in does not automatically provide a room before dawn. Send the flight details and get the arrival instructions and no-show arrangement in writing.

A staffed front desk and an available room are different things. If the hotel cannot provide the room at that hour, arrange a confirmed alternative or accept that the first hours are waiting time. A self check-in apartment also needs a working door code and a way to contact someone if entry fails.

Choose the airport route, not a generic New York route

The MTA subway guide describes a 24-hour network. Check current and planned alerts for the actual travel date, then lift status if you need a usable step-free route. Fewer changes can matter more than a small fare saving with large bags.

JFK: compare the whole party's fare with the final walk

The MTA's JFK guide, checked 31 October 2026, lists the ordinary adult AirTrain-plus-subway journey at US$11.75: US$8.75 AirTrain plus US$3 subway. Two adults pay US$23.50, and four pay US$47, one way, before any additional paid travel. LIRR is a separate rail product with its own fare and departure.

Check which AirTrain connection fits the running service to your hotel. An overnight local or a works diversion may take longer than the daytime trip you remember. At the Manhattan end, inspect the station exit and the final street walk with luggage; the nearest station on a map may have the wrong usable exit for your needs.

For a yellow taxi between JFK and Manhattan, NYC's taxi regulator lists US$70 base fare, plus applicable fees, tolls and tip. That is not an all-in US$70 quote, and it does not apply to every destination outside Manhattan. The ordinary metered fare's US$1 overnight surcharge should not be added mechanically to the separately listed JFK flat-fare product.

With four adults, compare the final vehicle quote with US$47 for the stated transit combination, then check that everyone and all bags fit. LaGuardia: the free bus is only one leg

The MTA LaGuardia guide lists the Q70 as free, serving terminals B and C, with a separate airport shuttle connection for terminal A. The onward ordinary subway fare is US$3 for most riders. The M60 is a different option useful for its uptown Manhattan corridor; choose by hotel destination rather than bus price alone.

Look up the next usable departure and where to board for your terminal. A free Q70 does not mean a free door-to-door trip, a direct Manhattan ride or a lift at your final station. If the next connection leaves a difficult walk with tired children or bags, compare an official taxi or booked vehicle.

Newark: confirm the onward train separately

The airport's AirTrain page describes overnight service arrangements and temporary construction changes. Read the dated notice for your terminal: an airport shuttle or AirTrain running within the airport does not establish that a New York-bound mainline train is departing when you reach the rail station.

Check the complete itinerary for your actual arrival time, including immigration and bags if relevant. If no suitable onward train appears, compare the next confirmed departure with an airport-authorised taxi or booked transfer. Get the destination and complete quote right; New York City's published taxi fare to EWR should not be treated as the fare from a New Jersey airport.

If the route changes while you are travelling

1. Recheck the alert and next departure before leaving the airport's staffed area.
2. If a lift fails, plan another accessible station and final ride; do not assume a replacement bus has the equipment you need.
3. Tell the accommodation if your arrival moves later so the room remains held.
4. If arriving around Penn, note that Moynihan's FAQ closes the public hall 01:00–05:00 and directs overnight Amtrak/LIRR users to Penn Station. Do not plan to wait inside Moynihan throughout the night.
5. Save your hotel address and entry instructions offline before the last connection.
