Start with where the bags need to end up
Before check-in, a bag drop at the place where you will sleep can save a second storage journey. Ask whether it accepts bags before room access, the charge and the hours reception can return them. An apartment with keypad entry may have no staffed storage at all.
After checkout, compare the final outing with your departure route. Returning to a hotel downtown can be reasonable for a nearby afternoon; it is less useful if you have finished near Penn Station and are leaving from there. The best price is the total for every bag plus the extra travel it causes.

Moynihan has storage; Grand Central does not
The Moynihan FAQ directs travellers to Amtrak's customer-service desk for luggage storage and says the service is available to passengers using other rail providers as well. The hall is on Eighth Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, beside the Penn Station complex.
Amtrak's national station-baggage policy, checked 31 October 2026, lists temporary storage at participating stations at US$20 per item per 24 hours with a valid ticket, or US$30 for the public with photo identification. Ask the Moynihan desk which fare applies to your ticket and collection interval before handing over bags. Red Cap baggage handling is a different service, not a substitute for paid storage.

These totals are item count × the published rate, excluding transport and additional periods. Do not assume one fee covers a whole family's luggage. Ask about an oversized item or a collection crossing the billing boundary.
The Grand Central FAQ explicitly states that it has no luggage storage. If your rail trip uses Grand Central, check a current private-host booking or a confirmed accommodation option instead of travelling there expecting lockers.
Opening hours are not storage-desk hours
Moynihan's public opening is 05:00–01:00. Its FAQ directs overnight Amtrak/LIRR passengers to Penn Station between 01:00 and 05:00, but that does not establish overnight access to stored luggage. Confirm the bag desk's own collection deadline and allow time before your train.
The walk to the desk and then to the departure platform matters, particularly with several bags or mobility needs. If you arrive at a closed Moynihan entrance, having a train from Penn does not mean a stored bag is available through another door. Arrange the collection while the service is open.
JFK storage suits a return to JFK
JFK's Terminal 4 page lists storage for a few hours up to 72 hours, with advance appointments or walk-ups. It requires a confirmed flight ticket and inspection, and says passengers flying from other terminals can use the service.
The airport page does not provide a complete current price table, so check the linked operator booking for the exact items and times. If your flight uses another terminal, add the journey to collect bags and then reach that flight's check-in process. For someone already in Manhattan, returning to JFK simply to store bags would normally introduce an unnecessary airport journey.
This does not establish storage availability or absence at LaGuardia or Newark. If you need either, obtain airport-specific confirmation rather than applying JFK's policy to all three airports.
Book a city host with the collection in mind
Select every item and both times before comparing a private host's final quote. Check whether the advertised “daily” rate has added fees, what happens after closing and whether cancellation returns cash, credit or nothing. These are provider-specific terms; no universal refund rule applies.
Keep documents, medication and valuables with you, photograph tags and retain the access instructions offline. If the host is closed or cannot take the bag, contact the booking provider and choose a confirmed nearby alternative. With a flight approaching, keeping bags and dropping an optional outing is better than trying a series of distant unconfirmed addresses.
