Tower tickets: price, age rule and time slots

The Opera's ticket prices are published as an image, but its reduced prices and free tickets page states that reduced Tower tickets are not available and lists the Tower at €20 even for school groups. The other monuments are sold in combinations whose prices we could not read in text form, so this guide does not quote them; check them when you buy.

The rules that decide whether you can climb, from the Opera's advice before buying and FAQ:

  • Age: children who will not have turned 8 by the end of the current year are not admitted; in 2026 that means anyone born in 2019 or later. Everyone under 18 needs an adult with them, and staff may check ID.
  • Buying: tickets go on sale 15 days before the visit (the FAQ counts in GMT). You must be 18 or over to buy online.
  • Your slot: the ticket is valid only for the date and time printed on it, and "if you are late you will not be allowed in". Arrive 15 minutes before your time to use the cloakroom.
  • Bags: handbags, bags and luggage must be left in the cloakroom, which is reserved for Tower visitors. Nothing larger than 20 × 30 × 38 cm is accepted, and large suitcases are not allowed at all.
  • Changes: you can move a Tower ticket to another time on the same date, or cancel the whole order, up to 2 hours before your slot. Unused tickets are not refundable.

The climb is 273 steps, according to the Opera's Tower page.

Opening hours this winter

From the Opera's opening-hours calendar, published to 6 January 2027:

Period Tower Cathedral Baptistery, Camposanto, museums
3 Nov – 3 Dec 2026 9:00–18:00 10:00–18:00 9:00–18:00
From 4 Dec 2026 9:00–19:00 10:00–18:00 9:00–18:00

Entry is allowed until 30 minutes before closing. The Cathedral's opening can vary on Sundays and religious holidays, and the Opera says it may change hours or close areas without notice. The ticket offices are at the entrances to the square and normally open 30 minutes before the monuments.

Florence Airport

Getting there from Florence

Florence's official tourism site says regional trains use Santa Maria Novella, and Visit Tuscany puts the train between Florence and Pisa Centrale at 50 minutes for the fastest services and 1 hour 20 for the slowest. Neither page gives a fare, so check it in the Trenitalia app or at the machine. Regional trains have no seat reservations.

Ticket validation matters on this trip, from Trenitalia's regional rules:

  1. A paper ticket must be stamped at the departure station before you board, and the journey completed within four hours.
  2. A Digital Regional Ticket from the app or website is tied to the train you choose and activates at its departure; you can change the time until departure on the day.
  3. Without a valid ticket you pay the full fare plus a fine.

From Pisa Centrale, the Opera's getting-there page lists bus 1+ (direction Park Pietrasantina) every 10 minutes from the Stazione 1 stop to Torre 1, and line 4 every 20 minutes from Stazione 8 to Del Parlascio. Autolinee Toscane's fare page lists the urban ticket for provincial capitals at €2.00, or €3.00 bought from the driver. If you fly into Pisa, the airport's PisaMover reaches Pisa Centrale first; see our Florence and Pisa airports guide.

Choosing your slot: a worked timeline

The Tower slot is fixed and a late arrival forfeits it, so plan backwards from the slot with the slower train time.

Step Allow Running total
Walk or tram to Santa Maria Novella, buy or open ticket Before departure 0:00 at train departure
Regional train to Pisa Centrale Up to 1:20 1:20
Wait for bus 1+ and ride to Torre 1 (our planning allowance) 0:30 1:50
Cloakroom, 15 minutes before the slot 0:15 2:05

So a 9:00 train from Florence fits an 11:00 slot only on a fast service; an 11:15 slot is safe on either. If the train runs late, check the time before you reach the 2-hour mark: up to 2 hours before your slot you can still move it to a later time the same day; after that, a missed slot is lost.

Florence, Italy

If the Tower is sold out

The Cathedral is free: buying any ticket gives you a Cathedral pass with no fixed time, and fixed-time Cathedral passes on their own are handed out only at the ticket offices on the square, not in advance. Visitors under 11 with an adult enter the Baptistery, Camposanto and museums free with proof of age. Because the Opera lets buyers cancel up to 2 hours before their slot, Tower tickets may reappear; check again on the day, but do not count on it.

Comparing Pisa with Siena and Lucca for a single day out? Our day-trip comparison weighs them. To reach Santa Maria Novella by tram or bus, see the Florence bus and tram tickets guide, and if a climb with views is the point of your trip, the Duomo dome climb guide covers Florence's own climb.
