Osaka Station to Universal-City, step by step
JR West's FAQ on reaching Universal City Station gives the route from Osaka Station:
JR West puts the whole trip at around 15 minutes. Some trains run directly from Osaka Station to Universal-City, depending on the time of day, so look for "Universal-City" or "Sakurajima" on the departure board at track 1 before boarding a plain Loop Line train. JR West's Kansai train status page covers both lines if you suspect a delay.
The JR pages we read do not print the fare for this section. It is a short JR ride: pay with an ICOCA card, which JR West issues, or buy a ticket from the machine at Osaka Station.
Starting from Itami Airport, Namba or Umeda
| Starting point | Route | Time, per the operator |
|---|---|---|
| JR Osaka Station | Loop Line to Nishikujo, then Yumesaki Line | About 15 min |
| Osaka (Itami) Airport | Monorail to Hotarugaike, Hankyu to Osaka-umeda, walk about 5 min to JR Osaka, Loop Line (inner loop) to Nishikujo, Yumesaki Line, then walk about 6 min | About 43 min (28 riding, 15 transferring) |
| Namba or Shinsaibashi | Midosuji Line to Umeda, then the JR route above | Not published on the pages we read |
| A Hanshin station | Hanshin to Nishikujo, then cross to JR Nishikujo | Not published on the pages we read |
The Itami route is from Osaka Monorail's airport route page, which gives the monorail fare to Hotarugaike as ¥200 (child ¥100). That page notes its fares are "as of October 2019" and may have changed, and it does not include the Hankyu and JR fares. Three changes with luggage is hard work; if you land at Itami with suitcases, drop them at your hotel or in lockers first.
From Namba, the Midosuji Line is the line that links Namba and Umeda; see our Osaka Metro fares guide for the subway fare. Hanshin's English route map page includes a walking guide from Hanshin Nishikujo to JR Nishikujo, which is the transfer point for travellers coming in on Hanshin.
Which pass, if any, covers the trip
| Pass | Covers the JR route? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Osaka Amazing Pass (¥3,500 1-day) | No JR lines listed | Covers Osaka Metro, city buses and five private railways, mainly in Osaka City |
| Kansai Mini Pass (¥3,000 adult, ¥1,500 child, 3 days) | Yes; JR West's USJ page lists it for the park | Foreign passport and Temporary Visitor status; bought outside Japan |
| ICOCA or a single ticket | Yes | Pay per ride |
The Amazing Pass page lists its rail operators without any JR line. JR West's Kansai Mini Pass page names Universal Studios Japan in its headline and sells the pass only as an e-ticket bought outside Japan, with prices "current as of August 1, 2024". JR West's wider Kansai Area Pass has stopped selling; see our guide to JR passes after the Kansai Area Pass.

Going on to Kaiyukan by ferry
The Captain Line is a shuttle ferry that Kaiyukan's access page lists as one way to reach the aquarium: it lands at a pier right beside it. The ferry is on the Amazing Pass free list, and its conditions there tie it to both attractions: departures and first and last sailings vary by day, pass holders must exchange for a ticket at the counter before boarding, and all sailings stop when USJ and Kaiyukan are closed.
Park tickets and Express Pass
JR West's USJ page sends readers to the park's official website for schedules and ticket types. We could not read the ticket pages on usj.co.jp with our checking tool, so this guide does not state park ticket prices, how date-based pricing works, or what the Express Pass includes. Check them on the official site before you travel. For another way to spend an Osaka evening after the park, the Umeda Sky Building guide starts from the same Osaka Station.
